the case histories : les psychiatres
galerie jean brolly, paris, is hosting “the case histories: les psychiatres,” the first solo exhibition of new york artist martin wilner in france. this exhibition involves two projects: “making history: the case histories” and “journal of evidence weekly” of the artist, who, himself is a trained psychiatrist and practitioner. the exhibition is on view through february 9, 2019.
martin wilner is a kind of translator who imposes himself, as an artist, a drastic discipline. his approach for ‘making history’ series is to analyze the daily messages sent by a correspondent, to interpret them day after day in pictures, using a magnifying glass and rotrings to establish links between each of the drawings. his subjects — writers, gallerists, artists, collectors or psychoanalysts — provide him for one month with emails containing what they have in mind, what passion or concern. drawing, which will be completed after a month of conversation, emerges in the manner of an exquisite corpse, an unexpected portrait of this accomplice, which nevertheless takes pleasure in entering the refined game of the artist,” the gallery says. this series showcases 12 drawings representing each month of 2017.
“taking the metro every day to his office, martin wilner occupies his time by recording in a leporello visual and sound observations for his series ‘journal of evidence weekly.’ no analysis here, his tragi-comic look captures the tumultuous and excessive reality of our daily life: portraits of travelers hidden behind a newspaper, absorbed by their laptops, lost in their thoughts, prostrate or asleep and snatches of conversations. one can easily recognize oneself in this almost ubiquitous frieze, where caricatured portraits and writings collide,” the gallery adds. martin wilner presents the whole human conditions in his notebook.
martin wilner was born in 1959 in new york, where he lives and works.
his works are represented by hales gallery in london and the sperone westwater gallery in new york. his work was presented by a solo exhibition in 2016 at the freud museum london.
