The nature of women and their role in society have been occupying the artist Michela Ghisetti right from the start. In her early group of works entitled Domenica, named after a well-known Hamburg sexworker whom she met personally and interviewed, the corsage stands for the subjugation of women. In a further early series of drawings, she plays ironically with the typical focus of the male gaze directed at women: she draws Courbet’s Origin of the World with variants of differently dressed pubic hair. Later, she drew monumental, photorealist portraits of young women, saying: I give women more space in society.
