Lines and Reflections
The season start of the Frankfurt galleries will take place from September 4 - 6, 2020 again parallel to The Frankfurt Art Experience. This weekend the Frankfurt galleries are opening their new exhibitions. In this context, Schlieder Contemporary is showing a solo exhibition by the German artist John Franzen (* 1981), who lives in Maastricht.
Life as a motif - John Franzen creates abstract, minimalist works of art through the action of existential forces and energies. The artist sees himself as the medium of the pulsating universe and tries to get closer to the origin of creation through drawing, breathing, destruction and his pure existence.
The exhibition shows three groups of works by the artist. In the works of his series "Creation is Destruction", the reflections of the artist and the viewer on mirrored steel plates become the work of art and the only motif, because he only sees himself. Franzen destroys this image with ax blows - here the destruction acts as an act of creation against the inner Narcissism in the form of one's own glorified reflection.
The delicate paper works from the "Each Line one Breath" series are created in a meditative way of working - with every breath the artist draws a line and thus lets us participate in his personal ritual. "One Line" represents a further development of the series of works - here a single line is in focus, which can be seen as a maximization of his previous working method. It has the intrinsic potential to develop into any form.
