Introspective" will be the first anthological exhibition of Roger Ballen in Madrid. In this project we wanted to select three of his most iconic series - "Outland," "Shadow Chamber" and the most recent "Boarding House" - to create a hallucinatory and enigmatic journey through one of the most personal and unique looks of contemporary photography. Ballen has raised throughout his career what we might call a voyage of discovery in which we abandon our most everyday self to deal with the most primitive part of the human condition and our psyche. The journey begins with "Outland", the culmination of more than twenty years of photographic work. Images belonging to the territory of the fiction where its protagonists are active participants of the drama of its own representation. This journey continues in "Shadow Chamber" by the recesses of scenes where the poetics, the symbolism, and the decadence of the object are the protagonists. Ballen looks for haunting and claustrophobic scenarios to get closer to his story. Humor, intrigue, chaos, dirt, and beauty battle and fascinate us or disgust us in a theater without spectators where chance coexists and the meticulous composition of distant and invisible worlds. Finally, our journey ends in "Boarding House" where both humans and animals appear isolated, strange and lost, but at the same time endowed with great strength. Survival, alienation, and a certain slit open to hope.
