Gentle But Determined – Sorbus support week
Gentle but determined is a series of events including concerts and an exhibition by the Sorbus-collective with their new work that will be on sale during the show.
The collective’s new piece ‘Sorbus’ is a strong rowanberry wine made from Vaasankatu’s rowanberries, bottled in 2016. Its character could be described with Finnish poet-mc Dxxxa D’s phrase ‘gentle but determined’ (hellä mutta päättäväinen). The Sorbus piece is an homage to the rowan trees of Vaasankatu, from which the name of the art space also derives from. The manually numbered forty piece edition has Riso-printed labels designed by Sorbus collective and a natural cork.
The concert evenings include live acts by artists who share common history with Sorbus.
All profit made from the artwork sales as well as the concert tickets will be used to help maintain the gallery. At the moment the future of Sorbus gallery is unclear due to a difficult financial situation. With the profits made thru Gentle but determined, we aim to cover the electricity costs and rent for January and February. From there on, the continuation of Sorbus gallery is dependent on possible new funding or other alternative solutions.
Turning five years old this January, Sorbus-gallery is an artist-run non-profit art space in Helsinki. Unlike most galleries in Finland, Sorbus does not charge its artists with exhibition fees and it works for raising discussion to change this questionable Finnish custom.
