FOR A MENDED TREAD
The exhibition features new works that explore Kelly’s subtle interplay of everyday objects. In Untitled (2019) we see a circular mattress upheld by a plinth with a moat like groove. Embedded in the center of the mattress is a small onyx fountain drain topped by a piece of perforated metal. A similar labor of impressions can be seen in Untitled (2019) in which an upright queen sized mattress curves away from the wall. Inserted into the interior of the mattress are two tire grooves molded in plaster and coated in graphite. By repurposing commonly understood forms Kelly asks us to think about the quality of things and the import of their permeability on our domestic and public lives.
