Booth A6 : Selenas Mountain
For the gallery’s first showing with UNTITLED, Selenas Mountain is pleased to present a two-person virtual presentation of works by Chicago-based artist Yvette Mayorga and New York-based artist Dana Robinson. These artists employ bold colors, unique cultural signifiers, and quintessential compositions to construct powerful paintings and mixed-media works. Applying paint as cake frosting, Yvette Mayorga’s rich saccharine works become textural relief paintings exploring the Latinx experience. Mayorga juxtaposes themes of border surveillance and colonial Rococo aesthetics while infusing familiar consumerist imagery such as the Nike swoosh, flip phones, Tweedy bird, the Latinx cleaning product Fabuloso, Cheetos and the Chicago White Sox logo to uncover uncertainty. Dana Robinson addresses black female identity, black love and blackness within her paintings, screen prints, and collages. Sourcing commercial photographs from 1970s Ebony magazines, Robinson bestows new histories and narratives to these images. Fashion and lifestyle spreads become disjointed abstracted compositions resembling a dream-like chromatic stream of consciousness.
