Finding his passion in the freedom that painting provides, Belgian artist Tom Poelmans taps into a primal energy in his work.
By doing so, Poelmans activates an uncanny vibrancy across his body of work. From struggle and pain to joy and ecstasy, Poelmans captures the essence of the human experience in captivating detail. The result is work that serves as documents not only of expression but also of Poelmans’ own biography washed across his work.
Born in Belgium in 1984, Poelmans earned an MA from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2010. He has since enjoyed residencies with the Vrije Ruimten Zuidas AIR in Amsterdam (2011); Isola Comacina in Italy (2012); SVA Summer Institute in New York (2013); and La Brea Studio Residency in California (2019). He has also been the recipient of many noteworthy prizes, including the Prize Camille Huysmans Laureate (2010) and the Prize Grote Actuele TekenPrijs Ronse (2016).
