Conjuring gradients of color in her works on paper or board, Danish artist Sophie Thorsen capitalizes on the rhythm of linework and the power of pattern to bring each work alive.
Informing her practice with her parallel passions for film and the documentation of urban spaces, Thorsen creates in her art almost the sense that the viewer is to look completely through it in search of a more defined form on the opposite side. This search is futile – the work is only the work – yet the hint of something more makes it all the more compelling.
Born in Denmark in 1971, Thorsen studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest, as well as at the Royal Academy, Copenhagen, and the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Today she is based in Vienna and teaches at the Academy where she herself once studied. In addition to teaching, Thorsen works to exhibit her art whenever possible. She lives and works in Vienna, Austria, where she teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts. Recent locations for exhibitions of her work include the Kunsthaus Graz in 2012 and at Bank Austria Kunstforum in 2013.
