Silvia B. (1963) lives and works in the Netherlands. She studied fashion design and sculpture at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, NL. Her artistic field is the examination of the interfaces of beauty and ethics. Silvia B. makes her sculptures as beautiful as possible, beauty that serves to seduce. At the same time, the sculptures engender a feeling of unease, because their beauty is unusual. The figures are hybrid creatures that float between different ages, genders, and cultures, or between people and figures and between people and animals.
Our relationship with animals and our own animal origins are major sources of inspiration for Silvia B. In her vision, cultivated man is still an animal driven by instinctive fears and desires. People still display a strong herd instinct, such as in following trends and fashion.
Silvia B.’s work regularly features hirsute individuals – people who were often exhibited in travelling circuses. This prompted her to create a series of figures in a circus setting.
