Treating the lost and abandoned as the crucial source of her artistic inspiration, Danish artist Rose Ekene recycles found materials into works that test the bounds between art and document.
Originally inspired by her work in music clubs as a teen, Eken began to collect those materials often left behind and combine them with a wide variety of materials in her studio. Emulating and recreating forms that would often seem peripheral elevates them to a new level of intellectual consideration that is both humorous and humbling.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1976, Eken studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1997-2001 as well as at the Royal College of Art in London between 2001-2003. Since completing her studies, Eken has enjoyed the exhibition of her work in a variety of locales. Recent solo showcases of her work include “The Show” at Huset i Asnæs (Asnæs, Denmark, 2017); “In Residence – Rose Eken” at MOCA Tucson (Tucson, Arizona, 2018); and “Pogo” at Nørgaard på Strøget (Copenhagen, 2019).
