France has been an important nation in the development of modernism. During the nineteenth century, France established the beginnings of what is currently known as the avant-garde, with movements such as Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Art Nouveau, led by world renowned artists. In the first half of the 20th century, Paris was a fundamental intellectual and cultural hub, establishing vital movements such as Cubism, Fauvism, Dadaism and Surrealism, amongst others. These movements flourished at the beginning of the century, in the period immediately preceding the Second World War. Dominant French artistic figures from the beginning of the century include Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque (Spanish national who settled in France) Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Le Corbusier amongst many of others.

Pierre Faure was born in 1965 and was largely influenced creatively by the 1980s. The generation of artists that grew up in, and were inspired by, the nineteen eighties was influenced by a period of rapidly growing global capitalism, political upheaval, notable wealth discrepancy, global mass media and distinctive music and fashion, including electronic pop music and hip hop. The 1980s was the era of African famine, the height of the Cold War, and also the end of it, as marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall. Important art movements of the era include Neo Geo, The Pictures Generation and the international trend of Neo-Expressionism which manifested in Germany, the USA and Italy (where it was known as Transavanguardia). The decade was exemplified by artists like Anselm Kiefer, Jörg Immendorf, Enzo Cucchi, Francesco Clemente and Julian Schnabel. Street art and graffiti began to gain prominence, key artists of which include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf.
