Launching her career amidst the YouTube video jungle, Petra Cortright has elevated the art of the digital image to new heights.
Sourcing her images from exhaustive searches of the Internet, Cortright experiments with the manipulation and enhancement of these images through mixed media. Building on the original manipulations of the self that she incorporated into her debut work, Cortright uses her compositional space as one to explore an abstract play of color and line. Each work begins as a frame in Photoshop, and from that point she allows the work to evolve, layer by layer, as she builds fantastical landscapes of color and form.
Born in Santa Barbara, California, in the later 1980s, Cortright attended the California College of the Arts as well as the Parsons The New School for Design in New York. Based in California today, Cortright has enjoyed exciting collaborations across industries as well as invitations to showcase her work in various prestigious locations. She was invited to participate in the Frieze Art Fair in London in 2013, and her works are part of international permanent collections including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
