What may seem trivial to others, Marlon Wobst focuses in on and elevates through the process of painting. Often with a playful and ironic undertone, his paintings of everyday items and events provide a healthy skepticism about the value surrounding historically revered genres of painting. Wobst’s work makes it clear that he is not interested in referential paintings while still respecting and bringing deep generosity of attention to his subjects of swimmers, cyclists, basketball players, and skateboarders. Ever observant, his paintings provide subtle humor to the everyday.
Born in 1980 in Wiesbaden, Germany, Wobst studied art at the Kunsthochschule Mainz and the Universität der Künste in Berlin, graduating with a masters degree from the Universität der Künste in 2011. From 2017-2018 he held a lecture position in painting at the Kunsthochschule Mainz.
Marlon Wobst has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including the International Solo Award from the Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; the Residence Scholarship Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf; the Master Student Prize of the President of the University of the Arts, Berlin; DAAD Travel Grant; and the Elsa Neumann Scholarship. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe, the United States, and South America in both solo and group shows. Marlon Wobset lives and works in Berlin.
