Luis Carlos Tovar
1979 · Colombia
Integrating different mediums including photography, mix-media, painting, and video installation Luis Carlos Tovar’s work is inextricable from his commitment to social justice. A firm believer that art can be a means for reflection, a catalyst for internal and external change, and a space for building resilience; Tovar explores themes of displacement and otherness in his work. Using the role of memory in the present Tovar has worked with vulnerable populations in his home country of Colombia, as well as refugees in Europe to develop decentralized spaces for exploring individual and collective journeys.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Luis Carlos Tovar first studied Architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, before attending the Universidad de los Andes for Fine Arts, Theory and History of Architecture, and City Planning. He received his Master in Contemporary Photography in 2017 from EFTI: Centro Internacional de Fotografía y Cine in Madrid.
Luis Carlos Tover has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Buenos Aires, Bogota, Paris, Madrid, Rome, and Pingyao. In 2017 he was awarded photographic residence at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris and received Madrid’s Photoespaña Descubrimientos Prize.
