Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen
1970 · Philippines
Striking a delicate balance between critical and humorous approaches; multimedia artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen addresses complex issues such as identity, gender, culture, religion, and social relations. Utilising an approach all her own, Cuenca Rasmussen combines performance art with composed music, scripted texts and songs, costuming, set design, and film.
Born in the Philippines in 1970 to parents of Danish and Filipino origin -- Lilibeth Cuena Rasmussen and her family moved to Denmark when she was only 8 years old. This duality of citizenship is often explored in her works centering around identity, and her 2014 performance “being human being” actually included her parents within the performance.
Cuenca Rasmussen graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 2002 and acted as a board member for the Committee of Arts Production and International Affairs for Culture and Palaces in Denmark from 2014-2017. She has enjoyed exhibiting her solo work globally, including at the Middelheim Museum, Antwerp; Art Basel Hong Kong; Kunsthal Nikolaj, Copenhagen; Renwick Gallery, New York City; and at South by Southwest, Austin and Miami. She is now Associate Professor of Timebased and Performance Art at the University of Bergen, Norway though she calls Copenhagen, Denmark her home base.
