Filling her compositional spaces – be they singular canvases or entire rooms – with an eclectic array of bright color, German artist Katharina Grosse stimulates her audience to the point of frenzy. The all-encompassing sensation of these spaces she creates can overwhelm in all the best ways and encourage those who experience her work to embrace it at its most elemental level.
Building on the legacies of abstraction and Color Field painting from the twentieth century, Grosse reintroduces the power of artistic performance in the intense ways in which her colors collide. That energy is transmitted to the viewer, who can take from the chaos a sense of spiritual rejuvenation.
Born in Freiburg, Germany, Grosse trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. She is now on the faculty of that same school and continued to exhibit her work regularly. In addition, her creations are included in the permanent collections of some of the world’s most acclaimed museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Kunsthaus in Zurich; and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
