Artist biography

Abstract painter Jeffrey Cortland Jones has mastered the art of subtlety. In his bold yet simply canvases, Jones treats the viewer of his work to subtle washes of color that seamlessly meld with almost pure white zones to convey an almost ethereal quality. Creating boundless works, Jones plays with the eye as his palette is both soft but also taken from nature. The result is a moment for the viewer of his work to question whether his compositions are abstract or narrative; organic or rendered with geometric precision. In this exploration, Cortland experiments with his own fascination with pattern and space to create strikingly original works.

Based in southwest Ohio, Jones completed his BA degree at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He subsequently pursued his MFA degree with the College of Design, Art, and Architecture within the University of Cincinnati. Jones currently serves as a faculty member at the University of Dayton while also maintaining an extensive exhibition cycle for both his work and his own curatorial endeavors. In addition to being involved in more than 150 exhibitions in the past decade, he is represented by the following international galleries: Angela Meleca Gallery (Columbus, Ohio); Galleri Urbane (Dallas and Marfa, Texas); Gallery IMA (Seattle, Washington); Kathryn Markel Fine Arts (New York, New York); TW Fine Art (Brisbane, Australia); and &Gallery (Edinburgh, Scotland).
