Giving new life to an art form often relegated to the realm of crafting, Canadian artist Hannah Epstein’s practice stems from her own early study of folklore traditions.
Relying upon the age-old medium of the hooked rug, Epstein conjures cartoonish forms in comical vignettes. Playful in nature and yet also bold in their exaltation of the strengths of the medium in a gallery setting. Epstein’s works are both fun and feisty in their critique of the modern art experience. Her references recall a nostalgic look to her own youth that compels modern viewers equally intensely.
Born in 1985 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Epstein is now based in Toronto. She earned her BA in Folklore and Religious Studies in 2009 from the Memorial University of Newfoundland and then went on to complete her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University in 2017. She has been exhibiting her work since 2011.
