Brazilian multimedia master Gabriela Maciel emphasizes in her work the dynamism of layers and how their convergence creates a space in which to explore and engage.
Working across fields from photography to sculptural installations, Maciel carefully considers the implications of space and material in many of her creations. She defies the rules of nature in her frequent conjuring of abstract, amorphous forms, yet she maintains her ties to reality in the ways in which these freeform elements intersect and combine. The result is an activated viewing experience that allows Maciel’s audience to genuinely invest in her aesthetic aims.
Born in Rio de Janeiro 1977, Maciel earned her degree from Central Saint Martins University in London. Today she once again calls Rio home but has enjoyed the showcase of her work in various locales around the globe. In addition to participating in numerous fairs, from Multiplicity to Area 10 multimedia OFFF Madrid, Maciel has seen her work featured in recent exhibitions at MoMA Shanghai; Dagmar de Pooter Gallery in Belgium; Laura Marsiaj Arte Contemporanea in Rio de Janeiro; the Purple Institute in Paris; and the Soso Gallery in Tokyo.
