Offering one of the most diverse bodies of work to emerge from contemporary Romania, artist Botond Keresztesi conjures otherworldly spaces that pair snippets of technology with unnerving dystopian landscapes.
Recalling the style of the early twentieth-century Surrealists in the precision with which he merges disparate forms in his work, Keresztesi creates a powerful commentary on the symbols, motifs, and machines that have saturated our contemporary existence. Both contemplative and compelling as they encourage the viewer to dive in and explore his myriad references, Keresztesi’s works prove the source of endless fascination.
Born in Marosvásárhely, Romania, in 1987, Keresztesi, studied at the Berzsenyi Dániel College in Szombathely (2006-2007) before moving to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest (2007-2012). Today, Keresztesi is based in Budapest and has been feted with the Derkovits Gyula Scholarship three years in a row (2016-2018). Keresztesi has also been an active exhibitor of his work. Recent showcases include “L.S.D. - Lex Selfie Drama” at Artkartell Project Space (2018); “JPG (Jurassic Park Genetics)” at Schimmel Projects in Dresden (2019); and “L.O.L. (Lungs of Lilies)” at the Galerie Deroullion in Paris (2019).
