Artist biography

Asger Dybvad Larsen, who studied at Jutland Art Academy and Malmö Art Academy, creates art that reflects on its own process, on its place in art history, or on its relation to a previous set of works. Larsen grew up in a small town on the west coast of Denmark and attributes a great deal of the self-reflexivity and introspection in his art to his psychologist parents. He had his first solo exhibition at the young age of 23 at Lunch Money (now renamed Jacob Bjørn) in Aarhus, Denmark, and his first international solo shows followed in 2015, at Pablo’s Birthday Gallery in New York and Galerie Rolando Anselmi in Berlin. Larsen’s paint tray paintings reference Frank Stella and other artists between abstract expressionism and minimalism. He also works with the practice of stitching together pieces of canvas, which shares similarities to the work of Sergej Jensen, Alberto Burri and Piero Manzoni. When he’s not travelling to big artistic hubs like New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, London, Barcelona and Rome for exhibitions and residencies, Larsen lives and works in Aarhus, where he can focus on his creative practice without too many distractions.
