Artist biography

Relying upon a blend of found materials and nontraditional media, American artist Alicia McCarthy conjures a striking artistic commentary on the merger between folk art and contemporary critique.

Pushing her creations to the very edge, McCarthy nevertheless maintains a sense of delicacy within her work, allowing that meticulous veneer to artfully veil the tensions that lie beneath. In doing so, McCarthy pulls the viewer of her work deeper into each composition in an effort to fully unpack the various references she evokes.

Born in Oakland, California, McCarthy earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1994 and subsequently completed her MFA at the University of California at Berkeley in 2007. She has been celebrated through the receipt of numerous awards, including the SECA Award and a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Residency. She has also been actively exhibiting her work. Recent solo showcases include exhibitions at Paulson Fontaine Press in Berkeley, California (2017) and ALICE Gallery in Brussels, Belgium (2019).
