Artist biography

Alex Olson’s paintings encompass geometry and language, occupying a space between perception and designation while engaging traditions of modernist painting. Considering the painting’s surface as both material and image, Olson integrates visual and linguistic signs into her compositions, leaving these fragmented codes flexible and open to interpretation. Pulling from the medium’s vast vocabulary, the artist refrains from cementing her work to a singular style, cultivating dialectical relations between forms within and between canvases. Olson’s expert paint handling interweaves color, shape, and texture to develop surprising and illusionary surfaces—compositions that vacillate between multidimensional and flat. Combining these nuanced surfaces with multifaceted signs, Olson’s work eschews a quick read, elongating the translation from looking to defining. Alex Olson was born in 1978 in Boston, and she lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2008 she received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and in 2001 her BA from Harvard University. Olson has had one person exhibitions at Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; Altman Siegel Gallery, San Francisco; Park View/Paul Soto, Los Angeles; Laura Bartlett Gallery, London; and Lisa Cooley, New York. She has shown in group exhibitions at Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and her works are included in their respective public collections. Other selected group exhibitions include University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor; Blue Projects, London; Mary Mary Gallery, Glasgow; Public Fiction, Los Angeles; Kayne Griffin Corcoran, Los Angeles; and Wallspace, New York
