Daniel Blau gallery opened in 1990 in Munich, specialises in modern and contemporary art and in particular works on paper and photography.
Blau is known for his groundbreaking exhibitions and publications, including four volumes of Andy Warhol´s 1950s drawings. Notable shows have included the first German gallery exhibitions of Rothko paintings, abstract works by Dubuffet, Julian Schnabel, Chuck Close’s Polaroids and Lucian Freud.
After the publication »Misled/Verführt – German youth 1933-45« Blau published recently »1937 – Japan attacks China« an intimate perspective on the outbreak of the war in Shanghai.
One of Blau’s more recent discoveries is a large group of vintage photographs by Weegee. Blau produced a book of 359 of these photographs. The second volume of further 300 hitherto unknown Weegee photographs will be published in Spring of 2020.
Besides his publications on vintage photography and his researches on Warhol’s 1950s drawings, Blau is one of the world’s leading experts on Oceanic art. He has been collecting and researching fish hooks from the Pacific Islands for more than 30 years, and the result is a comprehensive knowlegde of these fascinating artefacts and the standard book on the subject: »Fish Hooks of the Pacific Islands«. A comprehensive book on Petroglyphs (Rock Carvings) in Hawaii will be published in Spring of 2020.
