The name ‘CYDONIA’ refers to a region on planet Mars. Astrophysicist and cosmologist Carl Sagan wrote and spoke frequently about the red planet, even drafting a letter to future Mars explorers months before his death in 1996. This Sagan quote influenced the vision of the gallery: “Mars has become a kind of mythic arena onto which we have projected our earthly hopes and fears.”
CYDONIA opened in September 2014 with a curated exhibition and catalogue entitled Ex-Y: Representations of Contemporary Masculinity, featuring 9 different artists who explored masculinity after all three waves of feminism. Since its inception, CYDONIA has received critical praise from numerous press outlets locally and internationally. The Dallas Observer noted: “[T]he perfect combination of education and eye candy can be found at Cydonia Gallery. This commercial space features a roster of international artists, all of whom show potential to rise to art-stardom. [The gallery] has a keen eye for talent, offering numerous artists their first exhibitions in the United States.”
CYDONIA was one of the first galleries in the North Texas region to have internationally-focused programming that introduced the emerging, primary market to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area. CYDONIA was the first gallery in the region to bring programming to fairs in Berlin and Toronto.
In 2018, the gallery was invited to accept a long-term residency inside the Texas Theatre. Under new directorship, CYDONIA has been re-formatted as a gallery-artist co-operative space that works more closely with exhibiting artists in the context of a historic venue. CYDONIA remains a concept-gallery. The methods of exhibition have become more experimental and collaborative in nature, where the gallery co-conceptualizes exhibitions with artists, when appropriate.
