Founded in 2010, Bodega is owned and operated by artists Elyse Derosia, Ariela Kuh, Lydia Okrent, James Pettengill, and Eric Veit. Originally located in Philadelphia’s Old City, Bodega sought to add to Philadelphia’s non-commercial “alternative” art spaces while also expanding and reinterpreting the function. Driven by an interest to create a space for performance as well, Bodega ultimately moved to New York City’s Lower East Side, where it can be found to this day.
As a space for creative programming, Bodega seeks to be open to exploration and experimentation, often allowing their artists to put on performances and curate the space entirely by themselves. The gallery is interested in promoting the works of young up and coming talents and occasionally takes part in site-specific exhibitions.
