Matthias Wollgast shows a series of works that form a separate group within his current work complex. For his film project 'The Steps with no Name' he developed a series of props and objects that result from the sampling of different technical objects. The function and origin of the objects shown sometimes appear to be uncertain. Both collages and visualizations developed from them are shown as camera-less photographs. In addition to these works, Matthias Wollgast presents a selection of studies, construction drawings, postcards, flyers and a series of drawings from the film's storyboard. At first, the relationship between the prop designs and the film project seems to have been clarified, but a closer look blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, originality and reproduction, invention and reconfiguration of the well-known world of things.
The intensive examination of different forms of representation, the constant questioning of past constructions and their connection to cultural objects, images and narratives are core themes in Matthias Wollgast's work. In his presentations and installations, the artist always integrates the respective exhibition conditions as an independent format. He mixes existing objects, invented, appropriated and transformed, and lets them appear in various media processing.
