Ritterbex is intrigued by the similarity between contemporary (digital) exhibitionism and artistic practice. Core theme of this exhibition is the growing importance for contemporary artists of shameless and public self-promotion (ego boosting) through social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Still, just as important for an artist is to have actual conversations about the artistic process, for talking – questioning and being questioned – offers possibilities for growth, thus Ritterbex. It is this antidote to the solitary studio-life of the artist that we find in her movie “Talking about art with friends”. In this video, the process of meaning making through personal interaction is on display.
In her new paintings, Ritterbex explores the concepts of absence and presence, representing the same spaces in two different ways: filled with people and all empty. A face always attracts attention, even in its most abstract form. What then happens when all those faces leave the scene and all that rests is the presence of a faceless or ‘abandoned’ space? Does this completely alter the character of the work, and if so, in which way? These are some of the questions at stake in the recent works of Ritterbex.
