Description

In connection with these paintings by Susanne Knaack already familiar to us Sebastian Preuss has used 2012* the term inner landscapes in the previous catalogue to describe the images thus evoked before our inner eye. When studying these previous pictures we use to scan these, at the same time aligning them with the infinite reservoir consciously or unconsciously acquired in the course of our lives in order to recognize or “construct” the present picture as a landscape, even when, strictly speaking, nothing else has happened than that a black-and-white picture has been created through pouring paint on it and simultaneously moving the canvas. Thus, the picture only becomes what we believe to see: a landscape, a coastline, polar ice, cloud formations or satellite images of the earth, and so on. Quotation from the essay by Marc Gisbourne in the catalog "Susanne Knaack – Amidst The Flux", published by Semjon Contemporary, 2016 * Sebastian Preuss, "Susanne Knaack – Innere Landschaften/Inner Landscapes", catalog, published by Semjon Contemporary, 2012
