Historical Context of United Kingdom
Britain has been a crucial hub for artistic production for centuries. While it gained vast wealth through colonisation and the rise of its Empire, it was also exposed to the cultural supremacy of other countries and continents. In the contemporary era, Britain had been largely eclipsed by the influence of its European neighbours on one side, and of the United States on the other. But in the late nineteenth century, Britain became a significant centre in the development of the avant-garde. This includes the Arts and Crafts Movement, a major movement setting the tone for artist-led organisations, guilds and organisational co-operative types that would later develop into a template of sorts for bohemian artists movements of the Twentieth Century. Important artistic movements that characterize British modernism include for instance Vorticism, involving artists part of the Bloomsbury group. Some significant British artists of the modern and contemporary period include Stanley Spencer, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Paula Rego - and in more recent years the YBA generation led by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Chris Ofili and others.
Further Biographical Context for William Crozier
William Crozier was born in 1930, grew up during the 1950s and was influenced by the artistic atmosphere of the time. In the Post-War period the lens of modernism was focused, in terms of international attention, on developments in New York City. The Second World War had brought many leading creatives to the city in exile from Europe, leading to a substantial pooling of talent and ideas. Important Europeans that came to New York and provided inspiration for American artists included Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers and Hans Hoffmann, who between them set the foundations for much of the United States’ significant cultural growth in the decades thereafter. Key artists of the Abstract Expressionist Generation included Jackson Pollock (who innovated his famed drip, splatter and pour painting techniques), Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb. It was a male dominated environment, but necessary reassessment of this period has underlined the contributions of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois, amongst others.
