Toine Horvers, born in Loon op Zand, lives and works in Rotterdam. He is trained as both an art instructor at the academy of fine arts Tilburg and a drama instructor at the theater school in Amsterdam. Upon completion of his studies he worked from 1972 to 1977 at various secondary schools. In 1979 he shifted his focus to his own artistic endeavors and began creating performances and working with sound. His body of work has since grown to include written works and drawings.
Both the body and the space around it play major roles in Horvers’s work, which is characterized by diversity in physical execution. The artist’s oeuvre consists of performances, drawings, texts, sound and sculpture. His own body is often positioned centrally in the work a construct, which is best reflected in his performances and video works. There he uses his body as the central visual element. The posture and movement of his body align with, or contrast with his surroundings. His performances often take place in the public space and are site specific to the architecture and the urban landscape.
