German photographer Tobias Zielony recalls traditions of the past in his travel-focused frames of the modern day. Equal parts documentarian and expressive artist, Zielony uses the context of his images to expose, quite literally, the marginalized and peripheral plights of our contemporary existence.
From the history-filled streets of Naples, Italy, to the remote reaches of the Southern Californian desert, Zielony captures striking views that at times celebrate the marvels of nature and at other focus on those struggling to survive. This parallel creates a bittersweet sensation that resonates across Zielony’s work, as these frames recall both the most sublime and the most troubling aspects of our age.
Born in Germany in 1973, Zielony is today based in Berlin and has enjoyed the showcase of his work in a variety of exciting venues. Recent exhibitions of his work include those at the German Pavilion of 56th Venice Biennale (2015); KOW in Berlin (2016); and Galerie Nordenhake in Stockholm (2019).
