Creating dynamic compositions that resonated with the grit and symbolism of street and graffiti art, British artist Sebastian Helling conjures a myriad of motifs in his eclectic and energetic works.
Blending oils and acrylics with the more industrial medium of spray paint, Helling toys with the tensions between surface and depth as well as between absence and presence. From subtle hints of hues to the bold repetition of his initials “SH” that often cascade across his canvases, Helling’s body of work leaves viewers truly captivated.
Born in 1975 in London, Helling earned his BA from the London College of Printing in 2001 and subsequently completed his first MA at the Royal College of Art two in 2003 and his second MA from the Statens Kunstakademi in Oslo in 2011. Today, Helling is based in Oslo and has enjoyed a remarkable array of venues to exhibit his work. Recent showcases include “When I Was Young” at NoPlace in Oslo (2012); “Gi Labb!” at the Galleri Lab in Oslo (2014); and “Somnambulist” at the Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery (2016).
