Working in sculpture, animation, sound installation, and digital media Rubén Grilo sheds light on contemporary practices and rhetorics surrounding the theme of labor. Expressing the prevailing language around the joy and fulfillment of work, while exploring its inherently exploitative nature, Grilo seeks to put a critical lens on the actions of working society. In addition to creating multi-disciplinary art, Grilo has created a commercial line of non-drying oil paint dubbed “Everfresh”.
Born in Lugo, Spain in 1981, Rubén Grilo studied at the Universidad de Barcelona and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunstden in Amsterdam. He currently lives and works in Berlin. Grilo thrives in a collaborative atmosphere, and as such has collaborated with Spiros Hadjidjanos, Drop City, and Metaphysics in the past.
Rubén Grilo’s work has been exhibited in noted venues throughout Europe such as the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; Future Gallery, Berlin; La Casa Encendida, Madrid; Haller für Kunst and Medien, Graz; CIRCA Projects, Newcastle upon Tyne; Union Pacific, London; Nogueras Blanchard, Madrid; Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp; as well as the Computer History Museum, Mountain View, California; among numerous others.
