Born in 1897, Raoul Michau was predominantly influenced by the 1900s and 1910s. The first decades of the 20th century were defined by the energetic development of visual and pictorial art. These decades were an era of experimentation, with artists exploring into ideas surrounding Post-Impressionism, Expressionism and Abstraction. These innovations took hold with artist communities and collectives on an international scale, with many groups developing a variety of ways of communicating their ideas. Across the world, Expressive painting continued to be explored and developed in a number of countries. In France in the early 1900s, the Nabis explored this movement, and were soon followed by German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter. Through this movement the careers of some renowned artists such as Kirchner, Franz Marc, and Wassily Kandinsky were developed.
