Per Ahlmann was born in 1965 in Denmark , and educated at the Design School in Kolding , DK. He recently enjoyed his breakthrough, after his first solo exhibition in Copenhagen in 2006 and his successful presence at Collect in London and Sofa, Chicago .
He had been granted several prizes, notably Otto Detlefs' New Talent grant in 2006.
This is the artist about his work:
“In addition to architectural elements as space, expanse, volume, texture, light and shadows, I am interested in the ceramic sculpture as a tool for acknowledgment. In an abstract language I aim to "portray" problems or phenomenon, which I am absorbed by. As gesticulated hints and references to the "theme" of the sculpture, I wish to establish an impression of integrated consciousness - deposited in the objects. I combine the work of the hand, with the search for insight and hope for an exchange of associations with the spectator.
The characteristics and limitations of the materials is a fundamental issue for me. I make use of a working process which is based on analysis and experience, and I approach my work in a formal and aesthetic way. That does not mean that emotionality and sensuality are set aside – on the contrary, I go for a cool expression with sensitive undertones and thereby join an abstract, new formalistic movement in contemporary art. ”
