Consuming massive space with his all-encompassing approach to the creative process, Austrian artist Otto Zitko saturates his surfaces with rich and seemingly endless eddies of color that dazzle the eye and convey immense emotion.
Pulling hints of the vast past of Abstract Expressionism, Zitko updates that tradition with his frequent emphasis on singular colors. Using that solitary shade as the foundation of his scintillating scribbles that span his canvas, Zitko often builds a rhythm across his work that is undeniable.
Born in Linz, Austria, in 1959, Zitko attended the University of Applied Arts in Vienna between 1977 and 1982. He was thrust into the spotlight in 1996 with his receipt of the Msgr. Otto Mauer Award and again in 2004 when he garnered the City of Vienna Award for Fine Arts. Today, Zitko is based in Vienna and continues to showcase his work. Recent solo exhibitions include those at the Galeria Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid (2015); the Galerie Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman, Vienna (2017); and the LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz in Linz (2019).
