Further Biographical Context for Min Xiwen

Born in 1918, Min Xiwen's creative work was largely influenced by the 1930s. On a global scale this period can be best characterised by the duelling of the world’s dominant political philosophies - Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. The era took a sinister turn with the dawn of National Socialism in Germany, and Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. The decade would conclude in the inset on the Second World War; a political and social tumult that preoccupied not only artists, but great swathes of the world’s population.
