German artist Markus Oehlen’s art explores the space between the ordered and the chaotic; between pattern and abstraction. In doing so, he creates vivid and dynamic compositions that dazzle the eye with their myriad details.
Using a wide array of color and textured patterns overlaid upon his works, Oehlen conjures subtle references to form that are seemingly trapped between the surface of his compositions. Colors unite in powerful harmonies to create scintillating assemblages of form, meaning, and experience.
Born in Krefeld, Germany, in 1956, Oehlen trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 1976 and 1982. He has been an active exhibitor of his work in various notable locations. Recent solo showcases include those at the Galerie Hammelehle und Ahrens in Cologne (2004); the Galerie Bärbel Grässlin in Frankfurt/Main (2005); and the Galerie Asbæk in Copenhagen (2005).
