Historical Context of Italy
Italy has been tremendously lush in cultural influence since the time of the Romans, this classical period has exerted a fascinating influence on the cultural development and distinctiveness of the country. Italy represents the realm of the Renaissance, called 'Rinascita' in Italian, meaning 'rebirth'. The Renaissance has been considered, from the early 1400s, as the first major flowering of cultural sophistication in art, architecture, music, poetry, philosophy and politics since the Middle Ages. Throughout the modern and contemporary period, Italy was tormented by the fascism of Mussolini but has nonetheless remained as a vital heart for artistic expression, spawning movements such as Futurism, Arte Povera and the Minimalism related to the Zero Movement, as well as the expressive painting of the Transavanguardia. Important Italian artists of the twentieth and twenty first centuries include Giorgio Di Chirico, Giacomo Balla, Giorgio Morandi, Alberto Giacometti, Lucio Fontana, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Francesco Clemente and Mimmo Paladino.
Further Biographical Context for Mario Merz
Mario Merz was born in 1925 and was largely inspired creatively by the 1950s. The 1950s can be said to have been dominated by Abstract Expressionism, a form of painting that prioritised expressive brushstrokes and explored ideas about organic nature, spirituality and the sublime. Much of the focus was on the formal techniques of painting, and ideas of action painting were conflated with the political freedom of the United States society as opposed to the strictures nature of the Soviet bloc. Important artists of the Abstract Expressionist Generation included Jackson Pollock (who innovated his famed drip, splatter and pour painting techniques), Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb. It was a male dominated environment, though necessary reassessment of this period has emphasised the contributions of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois, amongst others.
