Exploring and amplifying the visual power of the bold contrasts between black and white, Danish artist Mads Thomsen advances the art of linocut through the delicate details he incorporates.
From seemingly translated photographic landscapes to close-cropped patterns that evoke organic sensibilities, Thomsen’s work underscores the artist’s dedication to the meticulous rigor of the printmaking practice. The clean lines and careful shading reinforce Thomsen’s abilities while at the same time encouraging the viewer of Thomsen’s work to question if what they are seeing is illusion or reality.
Born in Denmark in 1979, Thomsen studied at Det Fynske Kunstakademi from 2002 to 2005 and subsequently achieved an MFA from Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi in 2011. Since his graduate student days, Thomsen has been an active exhibitor of his work. Recent showcases include “Blanks” at Q. København, Denmark (2008); “Krumt Rum” at Kunstforeningen Gl. Strand (2013); and “Krumt Rum” at the Vejle Kunstmuseum (2014); and “Tales on Canvas/Els Cools//Into the Woods/Jakob Brostrup/Mads Thomson” at Kirk Gallery in Aalborg (2019).
