Emphasizing the role of color in her investigation of surface and form in her work, Australian artist Lara Merrett uses the space of her work to explore a new level of physicality.
Many of Merrett’s compositions exude an otherworldly quality in part inspired by the artist’s own travels around the globe in her youth. Borrowing from these memories and recollections, Merrett allows each work to evolve on its own, and it manifests across her compositions.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1971, Merrett earned her BFA in 1996 from The College of Fine Arts, UNSW, and subsequently completed her MFA in Painting from the same institution in 1997. Since graduating, Merrett has developed an international following for her work thanks to her rigorous exhibition schedule. Recent showcases of her work include “In My Nature” at Cat Street Gallery in Hong Kong (2015); “The Shape of Things” at Swab Art Fair Barcelona (2015); and “Casus Fortuitus” at Karen Woodbury Gallery in Melbourne (2016). She has also been commissioned for prestigious projects, such as her work for the Victorian Tapestry Workshop for St Michaels Church and the Sofitel Hotel, both in Melbourne.
