Historical Context of United States

The United States has been a prominent country in the evolution of modern and contemporary art in the twentieth century, especially in the post war period, when the cultural prominence of New York asserted its influence over Paris, formerly thought of as the most powerful art centre internationally. Leading art movements established and cultivated in important ways throughout the United States include Abstract Expressionism in various forms, Pop Art, including its West and East Coast variations, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Neo-Expressionism, Graffiti and Street Art, plus various post-modern repetitions of these many movements. In the modern and contemporary sphere, the United States has exercised a prevailing influence over the international visual culture, due to the hegemony of its economic and political systems. Key examples of critically acclaimed U.S artists of the modern and contemporary era include Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Further Biographical Context for Kristin Texeira

Kristin Texeira was born in 1988 and was predominantly influenced by the 1990s. A group of artists working in the United Kingdom, who came to be known as the YBAs, or Young British Artists, defined the artistic culture of the 1990s. Affiliated loosely by their age and nationality, they were a diverse group of practitioners. A number of the YBAs attended the Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths in London, and were favoured by the ‘super collector’ of the time, Charles Saatchi. The most renowned member of the group is Damien Hirst, and other members included Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Sarah Lucas and Sam Taylor-Johnson (née Sam Taylor-Wood). The YBAs became famous for their use of shock tactics and sensationalism, alongside their use of throwaway materials, wild lifestyles and an outlook that was defiant yet commercial. Due to the high amount of media coverage that they received, they dominated British art during the 1990s, and their work was epitomised in the group show ‘Sensation’. The art world was influenced by many trends throughout the decade, and was characterised by the derisive sculpture of Maurizio Cattelan, and sensitive, conceptual advancements as represented in the work of artists including Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
