1983 · Netherlands
Creating massive and dynamic canvases, Dutch artist Joram Roukes taps into dark, profound energy to create moving, visceral works.
Collaging together references ranging from the every day to the extraordinary, Roukes’ paintings take on the sense that they are very much of their moment. At the same time, however, Roukes’ references are relayed in such a way that they are universally timeless and thus ask the viewer to contemplate the perennial desires and drives of humanity.
Born in Lelystad in the Netherlands in 1983, Roukes graduated in 2006 with a BFA from the Minerva Academy of Arts in Groningen. Two years later, Roukes was feted with a National Arts Foundation stipend that afforded him the opportunity to take up an artistic residency in New York. Today he is based once again in the Netherlands, however he has enjoyed the showcase of his work in various venues around the globe. Recent exhibitions include those in major metropolises such as Copenhagen, Paris, San Francisco, and London. Roukes is represented by several galleries, including Galerie 42b in Paris and Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles.
