British artist Jodie Carey lavishes incredible attention to the element of surface in her sculptural works, and the result of this focus is a body of work with a tantalizing textural quality.
Incorporating transient elements ranging from cigarette ash to ground bone powder into her multimedia sculptural that evoke the sensibilities of the past memento mori tradition. Profound in their reminders of death while at the same time appearing seemingly light and ethereal, Carey’s works create a space for powerful contemplation.
Born in South London in 1981, Carey earned her BA from Goldsmiths College in London in 2005 and subsequently completed her MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art in London. Today, Carey is based in London and has enjoyed the showcase of her work in a wide variety of locales. Recent exhibitions include “The London Open” at the Whitechapel Gallery in London (2015); “Sea” at The Foundling Museum in London (2018); and “Parallel Lines” at The Royal Society of Sculptors in London (2019).
