Historical Context of France

France has been a significant nation in the development of modernism. During the 19th century, France fostered the foundations of what is currently known as the avant-garde, including movements such as Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Art Nouveau, led by world renowned artists. In the first half of the twentieth century, Paris was a fundamental intellectual and cultural hub, establishing cutting-edge movements such as Cubism, Fauvism, Dadaism and Surrealism, amongst others. These movements emerged at the beginning of the century, in the period immediately preceding the Second World War. Major French artistic figures from the beginning of the century include Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque (Spanish national who settled in France) Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Le Corbusier amongst a multitude of others.

Further Biographical Context for Jean Dupuy

Jean Dupuy was born in 1925 and was predominantly influenced by the 1930s. The period of the 1930s is epitomised by the clashing of a number of political ideologies, including Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. In the Soviet Union, Stalin’s government required urgent funds to implement the rapid industrialisation demanded by the first Five Year Plan. It initiated a secret proposal to sell off treasures from the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), including a primary list of two hundred and fifty unique paintings by the Old Masters, a number of which ended up in the collection of Andrew Mellon via the New York based art dealing company, Knoedler.
