Giuseppe La Spada
1974 · Italy
Using his skills as an interdisciplinary artist to explore the potential of water as a means of capturing the delicacy of our environment, Italian artist Giuseppe La Spada is one of the country’s leading figures in the field of environmentally conscious artistic commentary.
Water, alongside the other natural elements, takes center stage in many of La Spada’s creations and has been translated through his creative vision into everything from photography to installation works. Tying these creations together is his desire to raise global awareness of the fragility of our world and of the human experience within it, a subtle implication that nevertheless yields great impact across his oeuvre.
Born in 1974 in Palermo on the island of Sicily, La Spada earned a degree in digital design from the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome in 2002. Following graduation, he accepted a position on the faculty there and continues to teach at the institution today. His work has been feted with numerous awards, among them the Webby Award (2007), and he has also had the opportunity to exhibit his work in an impressive array of locales. Some of his recent installations include those at the Piazza Duomo in Milan (2011); the Tate Britain in London (2014); the Louvre Museum in Paris (2015); the Ecomuseo del Mare in Palermo (2016); and Manifesta 12 Collateral in Palermo (2018). La Spada is based today in Milan.
