Gijs Van Lith
1984 · Netherlands
Bending and stretching our understandings of what a painting can be, Gijs van Lith’s abstract expressionist paintings explore the creation of a work that is nothing more than gestures or raw material. Embracing a fundamental emptiness without the irony of post-modernity, van Lith layers paint to an excessive degree in a grid-like system using chicken wire to evoke the impression of the pixelation of a digital image. Above all, the joy of painting in Gijs van Lith’s primary inspiration.
Born in 1984, Gijs van Lith received his Bachelor of Arts in 2008 from AKV St. Joost Autonome Beeldende kunst, ‘s-Hertogenbosch and his Master of Fine Arts in 2013.
Gijs van Lith has enjoyed solo and group exhibitions both locally and internationally, in cities including Amsterdam, Paris, Portland, Torino, Düsseldorf, New York City, and Berlin. He has participated in residencies around the world, such as the CCA Andratx Artist in Residence Program in Mallorca, Spain and the Tao Hua Tan Residency in the Anhui Province in China.
