Historical Context of France

France stands out as one of the most influential agents of modernism. What is today referred to as the avant-garde was pioneered in the first half of the nineteenth century, and involved innovative and ground-breaking movements such as Impressionism, Post-impressionism and Art Nouveau, led by key figures of the art world. Applauded and dominant French artists from the beginning of the twentieth century include Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, although he initially was a Spanish national who relocated in France, as well as Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Le Corbusier, to name a few. Paris was thought to be the most influential and intellectual artistic centre at the start of the century and supported the development of such fundamental movements as Cubism, Fauvism, Dadaism and Surrealism, amongst others, which appeared in the post war era.

Born in 1933, Gabriel Godard was predominantly inspired by the 1950s. Abstract Expressionism prevailed in the 1950s as a primary method of painting, and explored ideas about the sublime and spirituality. Artists endeavoured to focus on painting’s formal properties, and Action Painting took inspiration from the political freedoms of the United States, in opposition to the strictures of the Soviet bloc. Important artists of this period included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb. In later revisions, the contributions and efforts of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois have been celebrated, amongst many other female creatives.
